What Does a Periodontist Do and Why You Might Need One

Here at M Dental Canada Water we have a team of dental experts. This includes that of a Periodontist. But you may be asking what does a Periodontist do? We can confirm you are not alone in this question – it is something we hear asked from time to time at M Dental. We know, like with many industries, industry terms can sometimes be confusing. So today’s blog is all about Periodontists and what they can do for you.

What is a Periodontist?

Put simply a Periodontist is a dentist who specialises in the health of gums and jawbones. Their focus being on diagnosing and treating gum disease but also on it’s prevention. They carry out a number of treatments which we will talk about later in this blog.

Is it just gum disease they help with?

No whilst one of their primary focus is on gum disease they also help patients with other needs. They can help and advise on gum recession, bone loss, bone and gum grafts, oral inflammation and dental implant placement. Some of these subjects, for instance, dental implants, we talk about in our blog: “Why Dental Implants Are A Good Option and How We Can Help at M Dental” which you can read by clicking here.

Why might you see a Periodontist?

You might very well have seen a periodontist before without realising. This might have been because you experienced loose or moving teeth, had difficulty chewing or even tooth sensitivity, particularly around the gum line.

What treatments a Periodontist undertakes

Treatment options, depending on the issue you are facing, do vary. This could be tooth removal, bone grafting (the procedure used to help repair bone loss following tooth loss or removal) as well as soft tissue grafting (the adjustment of gums).

Our M Dental Periodontist here at M Dental Canada Water has a wealth of experience, qualifications and regularly assists in research papers.

Should I Just Book An Appointment with an M Dental Periodontist?

Generally speaking you would normally be referred to a Periodontist here in the UK? Typically from other dentists or a hospital. Here at M Dental Canada Water we have a Periodontist on our team to ensure you receive continuity of care. This means that whilst seeing one of our dentists, should the need arise, our dentists can signpost you to receive the treatment you need.

There are things you can look out for yourself, which would need a Periodontist’s help including:

  • An abscess on your gums.

  • Tooth or root infection which often presents itself as tooth pain, although not always.

  • A change in the way your teeth fit together (sometimes referred to as your bite).

  • Gum recession.

  • Sensitivity in your teeth particularly around the gum line.

When it comes to dental issues, including serious issues like some of those mentioned above, it is always advisable to book an appointment with a dentist right away.

Why Do Periodontists Focus on Prevention?

Like with all dentists, most periodontists, believe that prevention is better than a cure. Fixing issues, and putting into place better practices now, can avoid long-term problems as well as expense.
